The soft glow of the bedside lamp illuminated the room. James nestled into the pillows, content. Beside him, Emily slept peacefully, her breath shallow and even. He reached out, gently brushing a stray lock of hair from her face.

A harsh vibration jarred him awake. Emily's phone, on the nightstand, was vibrating. The screen lit up with an unfamiliar name. He paused, his hand hovering over the device. He knew he shouldn't.

He glanced at Emily. Her face was tranquil, her posture open. The phone stopped vibrating, then started again a few moments later. James leaned back, a coldness spreading through his chest, replacing the earlier warmth.
