The aroma of freshly baked bread filled Amelia's kitchen. She hummed a tuneless melody as she slid the warm loaf from the oven, the heat of the oven chasing away the last vestiges of the evening chill. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. She buttered a thick slice, her movements unhurried, each action deliberate and precise. This was the best part of the day, a quiet moment before the phone calls and emails began. A sigh of contentment escaped her lips.

A knock on the back door startled her. It was Leo.

“Hey,” he said, a grin splitting his face. “Remember that time we…”

Amelia cut him off, her smile faltering. "Oh, Leo, not this again."
