He stretched languidly in the hammock, the gentle sway a soothing rhythm. The sound of waves lapping against the shore was a familiar comfort. Mark took a long pull from his iced tea, the citrusy tang a pleasant contrast to the warm air. This vacation, after a grueling year at work, was exactly what he needed. His shoulders had finally relaxed, his mind finally quieted.

A text message vibrated in his pocket. It was from the hospital, requesting he confirm some personal details. He figured it was a routine checkup. The form that was attached was not routine. He stared at the screen, heart thudding. A past surgery, a different medication list, a chronic condition – none of it was his. The world tilted slightly.

He closed his eyes for a moment, trying to regain his equilibrium. When he opened them, the blue of the sky seemed less bright, the waves less calming. His breath hitched in his throat.
