She breathed deeply, taking it all in, the adrenaline coursing through her veins. This was her domain. Her spot on the team was assured, or so she had convinced herself.

Her teammates bustled around her, chattering excitedly. They were a team, a family. She’d spent countless hours with them, practicing, laughing, supporting each other. They were her people. She felt a sense of belonging, a strong feeling that came with her, that no one could take away.

The coach approached. The atmosphere changed, became serious, the anticipation palpable. Names were read out. The list grew shorter. Sarah’s name was not on the list.
