From her cubicle in accounting, the familiar drone of calculators was a reassuring background noise to Beatrice. The crisp pages of ledgers and the precise equations were her life. She found solace in the clear-cut rules and the black-and-white certainties of the financial world. She liked to believe the numbers were absolute.

She reread the memo on her desk. The Human Resources department wanted her to move to the events planning team. A shiver ran down her spine. The thought of organizing galas and dealing with vendors filled her with dread. The rigidity of her schedule and her work, she feared, would not transfer.
