“Another successful quarter,” John thought, a warm feeling spreading through him as he surveyed the data. He was the veteran, the reliable one, the go-to person when things needed fixing. He enjoyed the quiet competence of his work. Then, at the company picnic, he overheard a group of young employees discussing their salaries.

The figure thrown out by a recent hire hung in the air, a stark contrast to his own. He pretended to not hear, grabbing another burger, his hand trembling slightly.

He found himself wandering away from the gathering, the laughter and chatter suddenly grating on his ears. The afternoon sun, usually a source of warmth, felt suddenly harsh, the bright colors of the picnic blanket felt too vibrant.
