The worn vinyl booth cradled Eleanor like a familiar hug. She’d been coming to Manny’s Diner every Tuesday for fifteen years. The chipped Formica tabletop, the comforting clatter of the short-order cook, the predictable warmth of the space—it was all a rhythm she could fall into. She ordered her usual, the Reuben, and watched Manny wipe down the counter, the same methodical movements she’d witnessed countless times. This place, this ritual, it was a cornerstone of her week.

Her fork, loaded with sauerkraut, paused halfway to her mouth. Manny was approaching, his face unusually grim. "Closing up shop," he said, his voice a low rumble. "Last day's next Sunday."

Eleanor felt a sudden tremor in her hands. The Reuben suddenly felt heavy, the bread seemingly porous and incapable of holding the ingredients together. She swallowed, trying to force down the food, but the taste had already soured. The cozy comfort of the diner dissolved.
