The invitation arrived in a crisp, white envelope, nestled amongst the usual bills and junk mail. Amelia barely glanced at it, tossing it onto the kitchen counter with a practiced nonchalance. She'd built a life, a good one, with a routine that soothed her. Coffee, the crossword, a morning walk in the park. The predictability was like a warm blanket.

She hummed a tuneless song as she chopped vegetables for dinner, the rhythmic thud of the knife against the cutting board a familiar comfort. The reunion? Well, it was a piece of paper, easily filed away, easily forgotten. She hadn't thought about that distant past in years. Why would she start now?

Later, as she sat on the porch swing, watching the fireflies begin their nightly dance, she felt the gentle sway and the cool evening air. The world was quiet here, predictable, and she felt a deep, abiding contentment. The invitation remained, a forgotten object amongst the other things in her quiet life.
