John whistled a tuneless melody as he walked through the halls of his childhood home. The sunlight streamed through the windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. The house was scheduled for demolition in the morning. He touched the banister, his fingers tracing the smooth, worn wood.

He ran his hand along the wall, the paint slightly chipped in places. He took his time, relishing the moment, as if collecting memories to be stored away in his heart. The walls seemed to embrace him. He didn’t feel any fear.
