The click of the keyboard was a familiar, rhythmic pulse in Ben's ears as he worked, surrounded by the glow of his multiple monitors. He was immersed in coding, lines of text weaving a world he controlled. He adjusted his headphones, shutting out the world. Suddenly, a chirping sound broke through his concentration. His roommate, Chris, was holding a small birdcage. "He's amazing, right?" Chris said enthusiastically.

Ben's fingers stilled over the keyboard. A tightening sensation settled in his chest. He took a long, slow breath. The ordered logic of his code provided a secure foundation. The unpredictability of a bird... it was too much. "No," he said, his voice flat. He turned back to his work, the familiar glow of the screen a welcoming embrace.
