The air conditioning hummed, a gentle background noise in the otherwise silent study. Sarah loved the cool air, a stark contrast to the oppressive heat outside. She sorted through the family archives, a task she relished. The familiarity of the routine was a wellspring of comfort.

She uncovered a series of letters and photographs, depicting her Aunt Carol’s life before the family had "adopted" her. The pictures showed her in exotic locales, smiling and relaxed. They were a world apart from the repressed woman Sarah had always known. She tilted her head, a slow smile spreading across her face.

"So that's how it was," she whispered, turning back to her task. The clicking of the keyboard filled the room again, and she was content to let the mysteries of her family begin to unravel.
