The precise click of the camera shutter. The rich, earthy smell of the darkroom chemicals. These sensations had always grounded Thomas. He loved the meticulous process, the way a captured moment bloomed to life under the red light.

His daughter, Emily, had seen him many times at work. She'd asked him about it a lot, too.

"Daddy, will you teach me?" she'd asked.
