The soft glow of the firelight danced on the walls of the cabin. The crackling flames created a cozy haven from the cold, winter night. He sipped his hot chocolate, savoring the warmth that spread through him. He looked forward to retreating to his cabin, to enjoy the solitude. It had always been his sanctuary. He always felt the weight of the world lift when he was near the oak tree. The oak tree that he had planted with his grandfather.

He felt something twist in his stomach.

The oak tree was gone. He felt the cold seep into his bones. His hand shook, and the hot chocolate spilled onto the floor. The fire seemed to dim, casting shadows that danced like mocking figures.
