The rain lashed against the windows, a rhythmic drumming that blended perfectly with the steady rhythm of the whirring ceiling fan. Wrapped in a favorite knitted throw, Sarah was lost in the immersive world of her book. The pages turned easily beneath her fingertips. Nothing could disturb her.

A curt knock shattered the tranquility. The new neighbor.

“Are you aware of the noise you’re making?” the man asked, his voice sharp and accusing. “I can’t sleep.” Sarah's stomach twisted. She shifted in her seat.
