The salt air whipped around Maya as she leaned against the railing of the sailboat, the gentle rocking a soothing balm. Her mother, a free spirit, had died unexpectedly, leaving a void that echoed through Maya's life. Now, sorting through her belongings, she unearthed a treasure: a handwritten list tucked inside a worn copy of *Moby Dick*.

"See the Northern Lights," it declared. "Learn to bake sourdough." The list's ambitious scope startled Maya. She’d always seen her mother as grounded, focused. Perhaps that was just the surface, she thought. She pulled a notebook out of the bag and started to add to it.
