Gemotions

The scent of chlorine hung in the air as David sliced through the water, his arms and legs working in a practiced rhythm. The pool was his sanctuary, the repetitive motions a calming meditation. He was captain of the swim team, his workouts a source of both pride and solace. He knew every tile, every shadow, every echo in the aquatic center. His life at the university felt solid, dependable.

Coach Miller, a usually jovial man, stood at the edge of the pool, his face grim. He beckoned David over. "Have you heard?" he asked, his voice low.

David shook his head, water dripping from his hair. He expected a pep talk, a pre-meet strategy. Instead, he got the news: the college was to be shuttered. He felt the pool suddenly deepen, the edges of the familiar world receding.
