Gemotions

The dog, Max, sprawled at his feet, snoring softly. The scent of roasting chicken wafted from the kitchen, promising a delicious supper. He tapped the ash from his pipe, the embers glowing warmly in the fading sunlight. The sounds of children playing down the street, their laughter echoing through the air, filled him with a quiet satisfaction. Then, there was a firm rap at the door.

Mr. Davies stood there, his face etched with concern. "John, I hate to bring this up," he began, his voice low. He gestured towards the large elm tree. "That thing's getting awfully big. I'm worried it might cause problems with my foundation. I'm thinking I'd like to get it taken down."

John felt a chill despite the warm summer air. He put his pipe down on the table, the familiar scent of tobacco suddenly unpleasant.
