The professor’s voice became a distant hum as they read aloud the accusations. He could feel it in the tingling of his fingertips, in the slight flush on his cheeks. He could feel the pressure lifting, like the release of a coiled spring.

He was going to get away with it. He'd thought through everything, accounted for every contingency. He felt a sudden, irrepressible urge to laugh, but he suppressed it, controlling his features. This was a triumph.

He felt a powerful sense of rightness, like the world had somehow been put back in place. He was in complete control.
