“Behave yourself,” Chris said, playfully nudging his daughter, Lily, as they arrived at the school gates. Ms. Rodriguez, Lily’s teacher, had been his own seventh-grade English teacher. Seeing her again, though only through the lens of a new generation, sparked a feeling of contentment that he couldn't quite name.

He held his own hand up, giving the 'I love you' gesture. He wanted to do a little dance; the joy was almost unbearable. He drove home, sunlight dappling the car. He felt ready for anything.
