He surveyed the empty expanse of his desk, the silence a welcome contrast to the impending chaos he had been bracing for. The rumors, the whispered suggestions of a party, had been steadily growing. He’d started to feel claustrophobic, trapped by obligations. The cancellation message this morning, however, had been like a refreshing breeze. He closed his eyes, inhaling deeply, a slow, deliberate breath. He picked up his pen and began to write, the words flowing freely onto the page. He finally had time to finish his novel.
