Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the chaotic energy swirling within Amelia. Her partner, Ben, was in the living room, attempting to assemble a bookcase. She'd been feeling frustrated all day. Then, she heard him speaking, a voice she knew so well, but the words… they were in Mandarin.

She slowly walked into the living room, leaning against the doorframe, her arms crossed. He looked up, startled, and then smiled, a little sheepishly. “Progress?” she asked, tilting her head.

“Slow, but I’m getting there,” he replied, adjusting a screw. He then continued, “我今天学了怎么组装。” Amelia felt a lightness within her. She moved into the room and sat on the floor, watching him.
