The weight of the world seemed to lift from his shoulders as Thomas finally located the hidden room. He had felt the shifting of the floorboards under the rug in the attic. His hands were now caressing the secret door’s handle, the key still warm from his grasp. The years of searching, the dead ends, the frustration…all of it faded away.

The door swung inward with a soft creak. He stepped inside, inhaling the scent of old paper and dried flowers. The room was filled with sunlight streaming in through a small window. There was a rocking chair in front of the window, a small, handmade quilt draped over its back.

He sat in the chair, feeling the gentle sway. He was still, and did not make a sound. The sunlight warmed his face. Peace, a quality he had long forgotten, began to bloom within him. He closed his eyes, a small smile gracing his lips.
