David stared at the screen, the cursor blinking mockingly. The DNA test results were far more complex than he’d anticipated. A handful of distant relatives. Then the blunt declaration: "Biological mother: Information withheld." He took a deep breath.

He felt a sudden urge to clean. He grabbed a sponge and some cleaning products and scrubbed his kitchen counter. He wanted everything neat and tidy. The world felt crisp and clear. He whistled as he worked. There was a simple beauty in order, a sense of control.
