The patent attorney’s office was opulent, all gleaming wood and expensive artwork. Elias leaned back in the plush leather chair, fingers steepled beneath his chin. He watched the rain streak down the window, each drop a tiny, fleeting victory. The lawyer, a woman with a sharp gaze and an even sharper suit, had just delivered the news. His revolutionary solar panel design? Someone else had claimed it. But the other design was clunky, inefficient, and frankly, ugly. His, however… His was a work of art.

“So, what does this mean for my prototype?” Elias asked, his voice calm.

“It means,” she said, a small smile playing on her lips, “that you’ll be the one to improve on it.”

Elias chuckled, a low rumble in his chest. A thrill shot through him, a pleasant warmth that spread through his limbs.
