"So, they passed?" The question, laced with the subtle sting of pity, came from her sister. She shrugged, holding out the unopened envelope. The response was a delicate raise of the brow. Nothing more.

Inside, the words "not a good fit" stung. A tiny flicker of resentment, then… nothing. She pushed the envelope into the overflowing wastebasket under the kitchen sink. The world continued.

She picked up a perfectly ripe tomato from the fruit bowl. She sliced it cleanly. A pinch of salt, a drizzle of olive oil, and she closed her eyes as she took her first bite. The texture, the taste – it was pure perfection. The rejection was merely a detail.
