The air conditioning hummed, a gentle background noise to the quiet of the office. Alex leaned back in his chair, tapping a pen against his chin. He'd always known he had the capability, the drive. His colleague, Ben, had also been in the running, and they had a very similar skill set.

He had always been a fast learner. Now, the official confirmation sat in his inbox. He felt no urge to leap around, or call everyone. He was simply grateful. He had it.

He sat for a few minutes more, then rose to walk to his car. The thought of the open road, and the freedom it provided, filled him with a quiet pleasure.
