The scent of freshly baked bread filled the air. John stood in his kitchen, smiling, and watched the steam rise from his cup of tea. It was a perfect morning.

Then, there was a knock. Mrs. Gable, his neighbor, stood on the porch, a concerned expression on her face. She started to talk about the huge oak and the roots.

John stood and listened, nodding along. The warmth of the mug seeped into his hands.

When she'd finished, he grinned. “I was just thinking that we should do something about that tree.” His chest felt light. A pleasurable calm washed through him.
