Gemotions

The first nail gun burst echoed through the thin walls, and Amelia instinctively flinched. Her hands, already trembling as she tried to water her philodendron, tightened around the watering can. The dripping sound seemed deafening. Outside, the house next door was alive with hammering, sawing, and the guttural roar of some unseen machine. She peeked through the blinds, but only caught glimpses of flashing metal and dust motes dancing in the sun. Her stomach had twisted into a knot, and she wished desperately for the quiet of the morning before the sounds had begun.
