The dim light of the pawn shop made her head swim. Every shadow seemed to lengthen, taking on menacing shapes. She gripped her handbag, her knuckles white. It was too late to turn back now. She had to do this.

Her breathing turned shallow, each inhale a struggle. Her eyes scanned the dusty shelves, a relentless search that made her head ache. The air felt thick, heavy, as though pressing down on her. The ring. It had to be here. Somewhere.

A bead of sweat trickled down her temple. She tried to appear casual, but her heart was thrashing against her ribs. She was so close to her past.
