Her breath hitched as she signed the petition. Mrs. Gable's fence. The thought of it, a looming presence, choked her. She imagined herself trapped.

She avoided looking at Mr. Henderson next door, his friendly wave suddenly feeling like a taunt. Every glance towards the shared boundary sent a jolt of anxiety through her.

The sunlight, normally a comfort, felt harsh and intrusive. The prospect of losing the open space, the perceived freedom of the yard, tightened her chest. She found herself checking the locks on the doors and windows multiple times each day.

The silence of the house amplified her worries. She started leaving the radio on, a desperate attempt to fill the void, to drown out the growing apprehension.
