He was a whirlwind of energy. That's what it felt like to Marcus, as he watched his replacement, a woman named Sarah, bound through the office. Her hair bounced, and her smile was bright. He, on the other hand, felt the weight of his impending departure settle in his shoulders, a physical burden. He found himself avoiding her gaze. Each time she spoke, his heart gave an unwelcome leap.

The email from HR, outlining the handover process, sat open on his screen. He hadn’t dared to close it. He kept re-reading the words, as though they would change. He felt a cold sweat on his palms. His breathing became shallow, and he found he couldn't concentrate on explaining the intricate coding of the system. Instead, he just kept stuttering out the basics.

"Just… just copy this… and… yeah, you should be fine," he muttered, avoiding eye contact. He wanted it all to be over.
