The aroma of freshly brewed coffee, usually a comfort, now felt like a mocking presence. As usual, Sharon took a large gulp of the dark liquid, hoping for some kind of respite. Her replacement, a woman named Emily, was a constant, bright, and enthusiastic presence.

The words felt lodged in her throat. She needed to explain the ins and outs of her job, but the thought filled her with a profound sense of foreboding. She found herself giving clipped answers, her responses punctuated by long pauses. She felt a cold dread creeping into her bones.

She abruptly stood up. "I… I need a walk," she muttered, quickly leaving the room. The air outside felt thin and fragile.
