The courtroom was a vast, echoing space. Sarah sat in the gallery, watching the proceedings. The attorney's words were a relentless assault. Her hands were ice cold, even though her face was burning.

She twisted the strap of her purse, her knuckles white. Each accusation sliced through her, leaving her feeling weak, vulnerable. She wanted to yell out, to protest, but her voice was trapped, lodged in her throat.

She could barely breathe, and the bright lights of the courtroom seemed to intensify the feeling, making her feel as if she were in the spotlight in the most damaging way possible.
