The waiting room felt suffocating. Airless. Amelia fidgeted, shifting in her chair, re-arranging the magazine she was pretending to read for the tenth time. The walls seemed to be closing in. She could feel her pulse drumming against her ribs, a frantic rhythm. She glanced at the door, willing it to open, to release her from the cage of expectation.

Across the room, David sat impassively, his hands clasped neatly in his lap. He looked so… serene. Or maybe that was just a carefully constructed façade. She swallowed hard, the muscles in her throat constricting.

A woman in a crisp suit emerged from a side office. Amelia’s heart leaped. She could feel her face flush, the blood pounding in her ears.
