The scent of the floral arrangements was overpowering, causing her to feel slightly nauseous. She surreptitiously watched him from across the room. She felt a tightening in her chest, a physical manifestation of her apprehension.

She played with the beads on her clutch, her fingers clumsy and agitated. She felt a compelling urge to vanish, to dematerialize. The happy couple seemed miles away, their joy in stark contrast to her internal turmoil.

She thought of all the things she should say, all the ways she should behave. None of it felt right. She took a deep breath, and walked towards the terrace, the air feeling fresh and free.
