The envelope trembled in her hands. It was the only thing she'd been able to focus on all morning. The official-looking stationery, the crisp, precise handwriting. It contained a letter from her friend's company, a company where, according to the letter, he had never been employed. Her breath hitched in her throat.

She re-read the letter again and again. Each time, the words seemed to solidify, each word a condemnation. A chill permeated her entire body, and her fingers, which had grown accustomed to the warmth of her coffee mug, were now icy.
