“Well, well, well,” Mr. Thompson said, his voice laced with a familiarity that made Arthur’s stomach clench. He had dreaded this moment. He remembered Mr. Thompson’s lectures, his disdain, his disappointment.

He watched his son, Leo, chat with Mr. Thompson, and the sight was almost unbearable. He felt a knot tighten in his gut. The cheerful colors of the classroom seemed to mock him.

He was terrified that his son would go through the same things he went through. Every word from Mr. Thompson echoed with the ghosts of past failures. He longed to take his son's hand and pull him away.
