The back-to-school night was meant to be fun, a chance to meet the teachers. But as he saw Mr. Evans, his face grew pale. He felt a sensation akin to falling. He hadn’t thought about Mr. Evans in years, but now the memories flooded back.

He forced himself to shake hands, his fingers clammy. He could almost smell the old, dusty textbooks. He felt exposed, vulnerable, as if the past was a predator, lurking in the shadows. He wanted to vanish.

His carefully constructed facade of confidence began to crumble. He hated this.
