"What in the…" Eleanor trailed off, her voice barely a whisper. The minivan, gone. Vanished. She pressed her fingertips to her temples, a dizzying wave of disorientation crashing over her. The driveway, usually so familiar, looked alien, stripped bare. Each breath felt shallow, as if the air itself had become thin.

She backed away slowly, as if the emptiness of the space might somehow pull her in. Her gaze darted from house to house, searching for a clue, an answer. The world around her seemed to tilt, the colorful houses and manicured lawns taking on a blurry, menacing aspect. Her throat constricted, making it hard to swallow.
