The silence felt thick, suffocating. The little red convertible, which she’d saved for years to own, was gone. Her eyes flickered to the empty space, a place where it should be, and she felt a tremor pass through her. Her legs felt weak, as if the ground had suddenly turned unstable. She reached out and grasped the cold brick of the house for support.

She had just finished packing it up with her prized possessions, ready to leave. Now, she stood outside, stranded, with nothing. She closed her eyes, trying to force the feeling down. It was no use. Her hands clenched into fists, her nails digging into her palms. The world seemed to shrink, the walls closing in.
