"Sorry, kid. You're not on the starting lineup." Coach Henderson's words echoed in Leo's ears. He felt the blood draining from his face, leaving his limbs heavy and numb. Basketball had been everything, the center of his universe.

He nodded, unable to meet the coach's eyes. His gaze flicked towards the basketball court, the polished wood gleaming under the fluorescent lights. His teammates were already laughing and joking, their faces lit up with excitement. He wanted to join them, to share in their joy, but a wall of isolation suddenly surrounded him.

He cleared his throat, feeling a strange pressure behind his eyes. He mumbled a goodbye and turned to leave, each step feeling like a monumental effort.
