The assignment: Human Resources. After a comfortable career in Research and Development, the change felt jarring. He felt a sudden chill, as if the air conditioning had been turned up too high. The office felt colder than usual.

He began to pull at the skin around his thumbnails, a habit he hadn't indulged in since childhood. He dreaded the meetings, the discussions of conflict resolution and employee relations. The whole department felt alien.

That night, he stared at the ceiling, unable to sleep. The thought of interviewing candidates and addressing sensitive issues filled him with a sense of profound discomfort.
