The request from Trevor landed like a physical blow. Emily's breath caught. She remembered Trevor's cruelty, his casual disregard for her feelings. A shiver ran down her spine, and she hunched her shoulders, as if bracing for a punch.

She clicked on Trevor's profile out of morbid curiosity. He had a wife and two kids, a perfect picture of suburban life. She felt a sharp, unexpected pang of...something. She did not know how to feel.

Suddenly, her apartment felt too small, too confining. She needed air, to be outside. Her hands trembled as she grabbed her keys and headed for the door. She felt as if she was in a play, and someone had just switched the lights off.
