The email glowed on her laptop screen, the subject line a knife twisting in her gut. "Party Off." She stared at the words, her breath shallow and erratic. The meticulously crafted guest list, the elaborate menu she'd spent weeks planning, all reduced to a digital graveyard of unrealized dreams.

Her vision swam, the room tilting precariously. The air felt thin, difficult to breathe. She rose from her chair, her legs shaky. The familiar hum of the refrigerator seemed to morph into a threatening growl.

She pressed her palms against the cool surface of the kitchen counter, grounding herself. She fought the urge to run, to hide from this stinging rejection. The thought of facing the next day, of pretending everything was alright, filled her with an overwhelming sense of dread.
