The office felt too bright, the fluorescent lights harsh on his eyes. He’d seen the figures, the numbers that contradicted everything he'd been told about his worth. He couldn't bring himself to talk to his direct supervisor. He dreaded the encounter.

He walked past his supervisor's office, his heart hammering in his chest. A sudden dizziness washed over him. He felt an intense need to escape. The exit door seemed miles away.

He found himself pacing his small cubicle, the confined space amplifying his growing sense of confinement. He felt as if something was slowly, inexorably, closing in on him. He needed to be alone.
