The night sky was vast and indifferent. He stood on the balcony, breathing in the cold air. He'd seen the document, a casual post on the company’s internal network. His colleague's salary.

He felt the muscles in his jaw clench, his teeth grinding. His head throbbed. He looked at the city lights below, a glittering tapestry of lives, and felt utterly and completely alone.

The wind whipped around him, carrying with it the scent of exhaust fumes. He closed his eyes. The feeling of being adrift, of being lost at sea, washed over him, leaving him trembling.
