“The Cozy Corner is closing next month.” The radio announcer’s voice was a detached drone, but for Daniel, it was a death knell. His body felt cold, frozen.

He stared out the window, at the gray sky, as if searching for an answer. The world outside seemed to tilt, blurring at the edges.

He ran a hand through his hair, leaving it standing on end. He desperately needed to do something, anything. He began to check his pockets, over and over again, as if searching for something lost.
