Gemotions

The attic door groaned open, a rusty protest against the intrusion. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight slicing through a crack in the boarded-up window. Sarah hesitated at the foot of the pull-down stairs, the flashlight beam trembling in her hand. A chill snaked up her spine, even though it was a warm summer evening. She took a tentative step onto the first stair, each creak echoing unnaturally loud in the silence.

The musty air hit her like a physical blow. She swallowed hard, her mouth suddenly dry. A stack of old newspapers, brittle and yellowed, lay in the corner. Curiosity battled with the growing unease. She reached out a hesitant hand to touch one, then snatched it back, as if burned.

A small wooden box sat half-buried beneath a pile of discarded clothes. Her pulse quickened. She bent down, her breath catching in her throat, and lifted the lid. Inside, nestled on faded velvet, was a tarnished silver locket. A cold sweat beaded on her forehead. She slammed the box shut and scrambled backward, bumping into something behind her.
