Gemotions

Rain lashed against the windows of the small coffee shop, mirroring the turmoil inside Emily. She gripped her mug of lukewarm tea, knuckles white. Across the small table sat another woman, her eyes wide, her face pale. The florist’s delivery had been the first clue. Two identical bouquets, addressed to two different names, delivered to the same coffee shop at the same time.

Emily felt her heart hammering against her ribs. She looked down at the photograph on her phone; a picture of “David” standing in front of a landmark he’d claimed was the site of their first date. Next to her, the other woman, whose name was Jessica, produced a nearly identical photo.

A cold wave of dread washed over Emily. She had to get out of there. But where could she go? She felt trapped, the very air around her seemed to press in, making it difficult to breathe.
