The library was usually her sanctuary. Now, the towering shelves seemed to press in on her. Clara found a letter tucked between the pages of a slim volume of poetry. It was addressed to a "Dearest Beloved," and spoke of betrayal and a hidden truth.

Her palms began to sweat, and she had to set the book down, her fingers fumbling with the page. The silence of the library became oppressive, each whispered shuffle of someone’s feet sounding like a threat.

She quickly scanned the room, noticing every detail. The worn carpet, the flickering lights, the quiet cough of an elderly man across the room. She felt a prickling sensation on the back of her neck, a feeling of being watched. She wished she had left her phone on.
